What Is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Laser tattoo removal is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity bursts of light to break down the ink pigment held within your skin. The laser delivers energy in ultra-short pulses that shatter the ink into microscopic particles, which your immune system then gradually removes over the following weeks. Because the laser targets only the pigment, the surrounding skin is left largely untouched.

I deeply regret having treatment here. After excellent HIFU results on my face with a different provider, I booked for my upper arms, attracted by the low price. The session in September was very uncomfortable and I wasn't offered any numbing cream. Since then I've had persistent pain and weakness in my forearms that has affected my daily life - simple tasks like driving a short distance, hoovering or ironing are exhausting. From my own research, nerve irritation seems a likely cause. I was contacted by two members of staff and offered a further treatment to help. I had an appointment booked well in advance but when I arrived after an 80-mile round trip, the premises was shut and no one was there for nearly half an hour. I've since been offered a credit note, but given the circumstances I feel a refund and reimbursement for travel expenses is entirely reasonable. Neither has been forthcoming. I am still dealing with these distressing side effects.

For anyone thinking of booking, here is my honest account. The booking process via WhatsApp was quick and simple. However, the premises were noticeably run-down compared to the previous clinic location. There was no answer on the intercom when I arrived. The practitioner arrived just before opening time without acknowledging she was late, despite my appointment requesting 15 minutes early check-in. The treatment room was cramped. During the initial consultation the practitioner was texting on her phone, which I found very unprofessional. I felt pressured into paying an additional £30 for a booster and the whole consultation felt rushed with no eye contact or genuine welcome. No post-treatment advice was given, unlike my previous visits to Vivo. For a micro-needling session at £129 I expected a far higher standard of service. A real disappointment compared to previous experiences.

A very poor experience. I booked and paid for a HIFU facial treatment that lasted only 20 minutes. Within a few hours I developed a severe migraine that lasted three days - far beyond the mild headache sometimes mentioned as a possible side effect. When I cancelled my subsequent booked sessions, the clinic refused to refund my deposit despite the next appointment being five weeks away. I found this to be very poor practice. I would not return or recommend.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

A focused beam of laser light is passed over the tattoo, delivering energy in extremely short pulses. This energy fragments the trapped ink into tiny particles that are too small to remain in the skin. Over the following weeks, your body's immune system naturally flushes these particles away, so the tattoo fades a little more after each session until it is fully cleared.

Which lasers do you use?

At VIVO Clinic Dubai we use FDA-approved systems chosen to match your tattoo and skin tone. The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is a proven, versatile option that works well across a range of ink colours and is particularly suited to darker skin tones. Pico laser technology delivers even shorter, more powerful pulses that break ink down into finer particles, often clearing stubborn or multicoloured tattoos in fewer sessions.

Can all tattoos be removed?

Most tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed, though results depend on a few factors. Black and dark blue inks respond most easily, while red, green and yellow pigments can be more stubborn. Older and amateur tattoos often fade faster than fresh, professional work, and deeper ink may need more sessions. We will assess your tattoo at consultation and give you a realistic idea of what to expect.

How many sessions will I need?

Most tattoos take between six and ten sessions for full removal, although older or amateur tattoos may need fewer. The exact number depends on the size, colour, depth and age of the ink. Sessions are spaced roughly four to eight weeks apart to give your skin time to recover and your body time to clear the broken-down pigment.

When will I see results?

Visible fading usually appears after the second or third session, with the tattoo continuing to lighten progressively as your course continues. Because your body clears the ink gradually, the change looks natural rather than sudden. Once a tattoo has been fully removed, the result is permanent.

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Most clients describe a slight tingling or warm, snapping sensation during treatment, which is usually mild and easily tolerated. Sessions are short - typically 15 to 30 minutes - and we can discuss cooling or comfort measures beforehand to keep you at ease.

Is there any downtime?

There is very little downtime. Some redness or mild swelling in the treated area is normal and usually settles within a few hours to a few days. You can return to your normal routine straight away, taking care to follow our simple aftercare advice while the skin recovers.

How should I care for my skin afterwards?

We recommend applying a soothing ointment as directed, keeping the area protected with SPF 50+ and avoiding direct sun exposure between sessions. Skip saunas, swimming pools and hot baths for a few days, and never pick or rub any scabbing that forms. Staying well hydrated also supports your body as it clears the ink.
