What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive treatment that uses concentrated beams of light to target the pigment within each hair. The light is absorbed by the hair and converted to heat, which damages the follicle at its root and disrupts its ability to produce new hair - all while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed.

Because hair grows in cycles, only follicles in their active growth phase respond at any one time, which is why a course of sessions is needed for the best results. With each treatment, regrowth becomes finer, sparser and slower, until the treated area is left smooth, comfortable and free of the irritation that comes with shaving and waxing.

I deeply regret having treatment here. After excellent HIFU results on my face with a different provider, I booked for my upper arms, attracted by the low price. The session in September was very uncomfortable and I wasn't offered any numbing cream. Since then I've had persistent pain and weakness in my forearms that has affected my daily life - simple tasks like driving a short distance, hoovering or ironing are exhausting. From my own research, nerve irritation seems a likely cause. I was contacted by two members of staff and offered a further treatment to help. I had an appointment booked well in advance but when I arrived after an 80-mile round trip, the premises was shut and no one was there for nearly half an hour. I've since been offered a credit note, but given the circumstances I feel a refund and reimbursement for travel expenses is entirely reasonable. Neither has been forthcoming. I am still dealing with these distressing side effects.

The clinic was easy to find and immaculately clean. The freezing was a little pinchy at first but became quite soothing - I even managed to read my book during the session! I had a bit of bruising on my back but had been warned about that in advance, so no worries. I also had the cellulite, neck and eye treatments, all of which were comfortable. For anyone thinking of booking, here is my honest account. The booking process via WhatsApp was quick and simple. However, the premises were noticeably run-down compared to the previous clinic location. There was no answer on the intercom when I arrived. The practitioner arrived just before opening time without acknowledging she was late, despite my appointment requesting 15 minutes early check-in. The treatment room was cramped. During the initial consultation the practitioner was texting on her phone, which I found very unprofessional. I felt pressured into paying an additional £30 for a booster and the whole consultation felt rushed with no eye contact or genuine welcome. No post-treatment advice was given, unlike my previous visits to Vivo. For a micro-needling session at £129 I expected a far higher standard of service. A real disappointment compared to previous experiences.

A very poor experience. I booked and paid for a HIFU facial treatment that lasted only 20 minutes. Within a few hours I developed a severe migraine that lasted three days - far beyond the mild headache sometimes mentioned as a possible side effect. How does laser hair removal work?

A handheld device delivers precisely controlled pulses of light to the treatment area. The pigment in each hair absorbs this light and turns it into heat, which damages the follicle and stops it from producing new hair. The surrounding skin is left unaffected. Because hair grows in cycles and only actively growing follicles respond, a course of sessions is needed to treat each follicle at the right stage.

What are the benefits compared with shaving or waxing?

Am I a suitable candidate?

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients need around six to eight sessions for the best outcome, typically spaced four to six weeks apart so each session catches hairs at the right point in their growth cycle. The exact number varies depending on the area treated, your hair type and your skin. We will design a personalised plan for you at your consultation.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

You will usually notice a visible reduction in hair after the very first session, with significant results building by around the third to fifth treatment. Once your course is complete, results are long-lasting, though laser hair removal is best described as long-term reduction rather than permanent removal. Occasional maintenance sessions every few months help keep skin smooth.

Is there any downtime or aftercare?

There is no downtime - you can return to your normal routine straight away. Some mild redness or warmth may appear in the treated area but usually settles within a few hours. To care for your skin afterwards we recommend avoiding hot showers, saunas and direct sun for a short period, and applying SPF and a soothing cream as advised. Cooling gels or a cold compress ease any temporary sensitivity.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most clients find the treatment very tolerable. Because the laser is designed to target hair pigment rather than the skin, there is no burning sensation - many describe a brief warm tingling or a light flick against the skin. Built-in cooling helps keep the treatment comfortable, and no anaesthetic is required.

What is the difference between laser and IPL?
