What Is Botox?

Botox is a refined form of botulinum toxin that, when injected in tiny amounts, temporarily relaxes the small muscles responsible for movement-related wrinkles. By gently reducing how strongly these muscles contract, the overlying skin smooths out and existing lines soften - while your natural expressions are preserved.

I deeply regret having treatment here. After excellent HIFU results on my face with a different provider, I booked for my upper arms, attracted by the low price. The session in September was very uncomfortable and I wasn't offered any numbing cream. Since then I've had persistent pain and weakness in my forearms that has affected my daily life - simple tasks like driving a short distance, hoovering or ironing are exhausting. From my own research, nerve irritation seems a likely cause. I was contacted by two members of staff and offered a further treatment to help. I had an appointment booked well in advance but when I arrived after an 80-mile round trip, the premises was shut and no one was there for nearly half an hour. I've since been offered a credit note, but given the circumstances I feel a refund and reimbursement for travel expenses is entirely reasonable. Neither has been forthcoming. I am still dealing with these distressing side effects.

For anyone thinking of booking, here is my honest account. The booking process via WhatsApp was quick and simple. However, the premises were noticeably run-down compared to the previous clinic location. There was no answer on the intercom when I arrived. The practitioner arrived just before opening time without acknowledging she was late, despite my appointment requesting 15 minutes early check-in. The treatment room was cramped. During the initial consultation the practitioner was texting on her phone, which I found very unprofessional. I felt pressured into paying an additional £30 for a booster and the whole consultation felt rushed with no eye contact or genuine welcome. No post-treatment advice was given, unlike my previous visits to Vivo. For a micro-needling session at £129 I expected a far higher standard of service. A real disappointment compared to previous experiences.

A very poor experience. I booked and paid for a HIFU facial treatment that lasted only 20 minutes. Within a few hours I developed a severe migraine that lasted three days - far beyond the mild headache sometimes mentioned as a possible side effect. How does Botox work?

Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell certain muscles to contract. When these muscles relax, the skin above them stops creasing, so dynamic wrinkles - the lines formed by repeated frowning, squinting and smiling - visibly soften. The effect is targeted to the precise area treated, so your surrounding muscles and natural expressions are unaffected.

What can Botox treat?

Botox is wonderfully versatile. At VIVO Clinic Dubai we use it to: smooth forehead lines, frown (glabellar) lines and crow's feet; slim a square jawline and ease teeth grinding by relaxing the masseter muscles; control excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, hands or feet; and correct a gummy smile by relaxing the muscles that lift the upper lip. Your doctor will recommend the right approach for your concern during your consultation.

How does jawline (masseter) Botox slim the face?

The masseter muscles at the back of the jaw can become enlarged through clenching or grinding, giving the lower face a wider, more square appearance. Injecting Botox into these muscles gradually reduces their bulk, softening the jawline into a slimmer, more oval or V-shaped contour. As a welcome bonus, relaxing the masseter also relieves jaw tension, teeth grinding and associated headaches.

Can Botox really stop excessive sweating?

Yes. For hyperhidrosis, Botox is injected just beneath the skin to block the signals that activate the sweat glands in the treated area. Am I a good candidate for Botox?

Botox suits most healthy adults who want to soften lines, slim the jaw, manage sweating or refine a gummy smile without surgery. Many clients begin treatment in their thirties or forties when expression lines become more noticeable, though it can also be used preventatively. It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain medical conditions - we confirm your suitability at a doctor-led consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Botox is a maintenance treatment rather than a one-off. Most clients have a single session and then return roughly every four to six months to keep their results looking fresh. Gummy smile correction and sweating treatments may have slightly different intervals, which your doctor will explain based on your individual response.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

You will usually notice the first changes within three to five days, with the full effect developing over ten to fourteen days. Results typically last between three and six months, depending on the area treated, the dose used and your individual metabolism. Having regular top-ups can help your muscles relax more easily over time, so results may last a little longer with maintenance.

Is there any downtime?

There is essentially no downtime - you can return to your day immediately. You may see mild redness, slight swelling or occasionally a small bruise at the injection points, but these settle quickly. To help the product settle, we ask you to stay upright for a few hours, avoid rubbing the area, and skip strenuous exercise, hot baths and saunas for the first 24 hours.

Does Botox hurt?

Discomfort is minimal. Botox is administered through a very fine needle, and most clients describe it as a quick, small pinch. For sensitive areas, or if you would simply feel more comfortable, we can apply a numbing cream beforehand so the treatment is virtually painless.

Will Botox make my face look frozen?
